Zombie-a-thon!
Get geeked for this weekend’s opening of Zombieland by checking out any (or all) of these unheralded old-school undead options
Zombies once were the working man’s monster of choice—not as flashy as vampires, not as overly emotional as werewolves, not as well dressed as mummies. That’s all changed recently, what with the undead having taken over the DC Universe and anchoring a best-selling novel—the Jane Austen spoof Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. The latest evidence of zombies having arrived is the fact that they’re about to co-star in the big-studio comedy Zombieland opposite Woody Frickin’ Harrelson. Let’s face it: Zombies have gone Hollywood.
We don’t know about you, but we plan on psyching ourselves up for Zombieland this weekend by digging up the older gems listed below. Note that we didn’t even bother mentioning George Romero’s zombie films, Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series or Peter Jackson’s masterpiece Dead Alive because we assume you’ve already seen them. (If not, you need to either rent them all this weekend or unsubscribe from this mailing list.)
Zombie
(aka Zombi 2)
The highlight of this film from Italian gore god Lucio Fulci is the scene where a zombie fights a shark.
Re-Animator
A horror flick about a doctor re-animating corpses so good that when it debuted in 1985 even Roger Ebert loved it.
Cemetery Man
When Italian zombies rise from their graves, they’re dispatched by… Rupert Everett?!?
Night of the Creeps
Alien slugs take over the bodies of humans both living and dead. And then head directly to a sorority house. Obviously.
