Night of the George Romero Flicks
Honor the remake of the zombie guru’s best forgotten film with a fest of his other horrors
Sure this weekend’s horror flick The Crazies looks good, but you know what would make it look
better? If the production values were lower and the acting was worse!
Which is to say you should check out the original 1973
version (just released on Blu-ray), helmed by Night of the Living Dead/Dawn
of the Dead/Day of the Dead director George
Romero. The plot is essentially the same: A small town’s water supply is
accidentally poisoned with a biological weapon, causing the townspeople to
become dead-eyed psychopaths. Largely forgotten, The Crazies was arguably Romero’s best non-zombie film.
(Probably because it’s pretty much like a zombie film.)
In honor of this weekend’s remake, why not have a whole film
fest of forgotten Romero flicks? In addition to The Crazies, may we suggest:
Martin The story of
a teenager who isn’t technically a vampire—he just likes to slice
open girls and drink their blood.
Knightriders A
motorcycle gang flick where the bikers wear suits of armor. And are led by Ed
Harris.
There’s Always Vanilla
The second movie Romero ever directed was actually a romantic comedy. Was it
any good? Absolutely not. But aren’t you more than a little curious to see what
happens in a George Romero romantic comedy?
