Girls Just Wanna Geek Out

Leslie Simon shows those Sex and the City socialites a real girls night out.

Some girls spent their childhoods wishing upon a star for a prince to whisk them away. Others spent them wishing upon a Death Star for a scruffy looking nerf herder to banter with. If you’re the latter, grab your finest pair of horn-rimmed glasses and head to NerdMelt on Thursday, November 3rd for the Geek Girls Unite show, hosted by music lover, author and (*gasp*) girl Leslie Simon in honor of her new book, Geek Girls Unite: How Fangirls, Bookworms, Indie Chicks, and Other Misfits Are Taking Over the World.

If you missed last month’s GeekGirlCon in Seattle, now you have something else to lord over that city besides sunshine. Leslie is bringing in some lovely ladies to help celebrate the rise of the fangirl, including impressionist Melissa Villasenor (her Sarah Silverman is killer), Community writer Megan Ganz, and stand up comics Ali Wong, Jackie Kashian and the immortal Maria Bamford (seriously, we think she might live forever). As an added bonus, Alie and Georgia, most famous for ahead-of-their-time cocktails like the Ham Daiquiri and the legendary McNuggetini, will provide a drink demonstration; so come thirsty and/or with an empty bottle to discreetly pour their concoctions into if the boozing gets too meat based.

It’s a guild that Felicia Day would be proud of, so prepare to do battle with any pre-conceived notions about who really populates the geek-o-sphere. Then pregame with a screening of Ghost World and set off to break open the boys club. You certainly don't have to be a girl to attend, but it helps to be over your crippling fear of them. To quote a certain geek girl queen: “We want to go to there.”
