Stuntmen and Robots and Goblins, Oh My
A guide to the most exciting upcoming films at LAFF 2011.
Film festivals aren't always stuffy affairs on French beaches. The LA Film Festival
the best in independent (and the occasional not-so-independent) film right to us. The 100+ screenings from June 16-26 could make your head spin, but
there's no need to stress over what to see first. We've hand-picked the must-see flicks for our favorite film fans. So trust us to manage your calendar; you'll need all your energy for carrying that giant tub of popcorn.
#1. Drive (Fri., June 17, 8 p.m.) - Ryan Gosling plays a stunt driver who's also pretty handy with a getaway car. He takes one last job and everything goes perfectly...just kidding. Things go very badly.
#2. Karate-Robo Zaborgar (Sat., June 18, 10:30 p.m.; Tues., June 21, 10:30 p.m.) - A giant mechanical monster is attacking, and the only man who can stop it is an ex-cop whose motorcycle transforms into a robot.
#3. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (Sun., June 26, 7:30 p.m.) - Guillermo del Toro-produced remake of one of the scariest made-for-TV movies ever. Evil fairies who live behind the fireplace pretend to befriend a little girl, but they actually want to pluck out her teeth.
#4. Oh, and Green Lantern will be screening on Thursday, June 16th at 10:30 p.m. It's a small picture about a gentleman who finds the perfect green ring to complement his outfit and bring out the color in his eyes.
