Nerdist at South by Southwest 2013
The worlds of circus and cosplay come together at SXSW.
Every year since 1987, the city of Austin, TX gets even weirder than it already is for South by Southwest, the interactive film and music festival that showcases new and established talent of all varieties, this year going from March 8-17. Last year, the festival premiered movies like 21 Jump Street and The Cabin in the Woods and saw over 2,500 musical acts performing at 100 venues citywide. It's kind of a huge thing. It's also become a great place for interactive entertainment companies to flaunt their wares and this year Nerdist is right in the thick of it with some great events for people to visit.
Cosplayers from far and wide (and the people who love them) should be in attendance on Sunday, March 10th, for the SXSW's Social Underground hosted by Nerdist. The official SXSW cosplay competition, emceed by Seth Herzog and Meg Turney, the event will let people show off their best anime, sci-fi and video game costumes and imbibe famousness by the pint. Right afterward, Youngblood Hawke and Ra Ra Riot will take the stage for a featured performance! You can watch the contest and the concert streaming LIVE on the Nerdist Channel (subscribe for all the goodness).
If you're interested in high-flying acrobatics, then the thing for you will be #EVOKE13, a Cirque du Soleil developed exclusively for SXSW 2013. This takes place at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater on March 12th. Chris Hardwick will host a roundtable discussion at the event with Meg Turney and members of Cirque du Soleil who will be performing a stunt with our captain of cosplay. We're betting wires will be utilized. Music at the event will be provided by The Divine Fits. Doors open at 7 with the show beginning at 8. This one's available for all Interactive, Film, Music and Gold Platinum wristband holders. You know who you are. And look out for Nerdist News coverage on the Nerdist Channel in the days following the event.
Of course, those are just the Nerdist events over the 10-day art spectacular; there are plenty of other things to check out in the interactive corner of the festival. Warner Bros. is unveiling its Tell-a-Vision immersive space, dedicated to the art of storytelling. This will include a look at NBC's Revolution and a conversation between TV writer/producer Chuck Lorre and dream weaver Neil Gaiman. There will also be a Game of Thrones art gallery set up by Alamo Drafthouse's art wing, Mondo. And SyFy's new series, Defiance, which will be both a TV show and an online game set in the same universe, will offer a chance for people to step into that world with The Defiance Container Village.
So much greatness in one great city. For more info on South by Southwest, including the music and film angles, check out the full schedule.
