A Credible Comedian Rips Into Rip-Offs
Writer Kevin Maher digs up rare cinematic diamonds in a sea of cubic zirconia.
Shoddy
bootlegs have adulterated everything from school supplies to
Manhattan's martyrs. On the cinema tip, Transformers
has
reformed as Transmorphers,
E.T.
has phonied home as Mac
and Me
and
remember those Star
Wars
prequels?
Might even Jean-Claude Van Damme's Knock
Off be a super meta knock-off of movies themselves? These rip-offs of the
silver (er, aluminum) screen most irk comedian
Kevin Maher. On September 15th, he and some genuine guests take to
92YTribeca (a very legitimate model of the Upper East Side
institution) to showcase some of the most flipped out film
frauds.
Amongst
the evidence will be a montage of bizarro international superhero
flicks presented by comic book blogger Nick
Nadel.
Plus, Halloween
horrors
that cut up John Carpenter's classic and Jaws
dupes
that really bite the big one. In case there's any fanboy fussing,
Professor Geoff Klock will clarify what separates rip-off and
homage.
If
that line up isn't a treat unto itself, baker Sara Reiss will serve
up some themed sweets and prizes will be awarded to trivia pirates.

the inside of his trench coat won't get you through the door).
